Sinclair Clan

Clan Sinclair of Scotland - descended from Henry St. Clair of England, who went to Scotland as Vicecomes to Richard Morville, Constable of Scotland in 1163. His family was originally from Saint-Clare-sur-Elle in Normandy. He was granted an estate in Herdmanstoun, Haddingtonshire and the title of Baron. Sir William St. Clair, Sheriff of Edinburgh. He was granted the barony of Roslin in 1280.

Henry's son, Sir Henry, swore allegiance to Edward I of England in 1296, and the family at first supported the Balliols but later joined Robert the Bruce and they fought at Bannockburn in 1314. Sir Henry was rewarded with lands near Pentland in 1317. Sir Henrys son, Sir William, was a favourite of King Robert, and he accompanied Sir James Douglas on his expedition to the Holy Land with the heart of the king, but was killed when he joined the King of Aragon in his fight against the Moors. Sir Henrys son William married Isabel, daughter Malise. Earl of Strathearn, son of Magnus V, the last Norse Jarl of Orkney and their son Henry became Earl of Orkney on the death of his mother and was recognized by Haakon VI of Norway in 1379.
